Easy Items to Buy to Improve Wardrobe
Last year's events may have made us replace our smart blazers and jeans for loungewear and slippers for the time being, but that won't last forever. Trust me when I tell you this – now is the prefect time to work on your capsule wardrobe and fill it up with fundamental basic pieces that will serve you for years to come.
If you're going to be spending so much time at home, you might as well spend it doing something that will actually improve the quality of your life. Creating a capsule wardrobe of simple basic pieces is about more than just what you wear. It's also about reducing stress, saving time, and ultimately making life easier – your fashion life at least.
Did you know that the average person spends 90 to 115 minutes a week deciding what to wear? Who has time for that in this day and age?! On top of saving time, being more mindful of what you wear and buying less has a positive impact on the environment, and your bank account for that matter.
If you're new to the concept of an all-year capsule wardrobe, this post will be very useful for you. It will also be helpful to those of you who have already minimized your wardrobes and are looking for some basic pieces to have in your closet. This post is all about basic pieces that you must have in your closet.
1. Classy Trench Coat
Let's start off with the classy trench coat. This is the ultimate wardrobe staple for any closet. One of those timeless fashion pieces that will carry you through the seasons. Here is a great affordable, yet sustainable option from Everlane that is worth investing in.
2. Classy Beige Coat
The beige coat is the cold season alternative to the trench coat. Another MUST-HAVE wardrobe essential. Not only does it make your outfit more media-worthy than mediocre, but it can be paired with so many different things. For those days when the mere idea of peeling your face off the pillow seems like an impossible task, let alone getting dressed. This is the coat that transforms the mild-mannered Diana Prince into the Wonder Woman who gets sh*t done.
3. Denim Jacket
Next on the list is the good old denim jacket. An item that you can wear with pretty much everything. The shade of denim is totally up to your personal preference. Go a size up so it's easier to style it with more things by layering. Everlane offers some great denim jackets that are made of GOTS-certified organic cotton responsibly produced to minimize environmental impact.

4. Blazer
Wouldn't it be fantastic if there was a basic piece of clothing that could elevate your day-to-day look whilst making dressing every day easier? Well, you're in luck. There is, and her name is Blazer. Always go for an oversized fit so you can layer it up for the cold months or wear it over-fitted jeans/leggings for a more casual yet classy look when the weather gets warmer.
Now that we've covered the outerwear, it's time to move on to the tops.
5. Basic Sweater
You probably have tons of basic sweaters in your wardrobe already. I mean, they're the definition for an all-year-round staple. As with almost all capsule wardrobe basic pieces, you want one that is simple, durable, and versatile. The ones that Everlane offers are made of lightweight organic cotton which makes them not only super soft but breathable too. Bonus!
6. Turtlenecks
Another wardrobe classic that will never disappoint is the turtleneck. When looking for versatility, you've hit the jackpot with this fashion gem. Just like ketchup, it goes with pretty much anything. You have the elegant option that shows you have style and class, or the snuggly duvet-day option for your next series binge. This basic wardrobe piece is so great for layering it would make Mary Berry blush.

7. White Hoodie
The white hoodie takes place in my list of basic pieces not only because it's been an absolute essential for my lockdown outfits (see proof here) but also because it's an item that both maximizes our comfort whilst keeping us feeling great. Style it with a comfy pair of sweatpants and white sneakers if you're feeling casual or throw on a camel coat and a classy black clutch bag for a more polished look.
8. White Shirt
I will keep it short as a lot has been said about the white shirt. If you're looking for capsule wardrobe basic pieces, it should be at the top of your checklist. Just like with the blazer, go for oversize here, so you can dress it up or down with ease. & Other Stories is a great go-to place for white button-up shirts.
9. Basic T-Shirts
You don't need to have many basic t-shirts but if you get your hands on neutral colored ones, you will make your life so much easier. The cut and the fit are up to you. ZARA is great for basic tees, but if you're looking for a more sustainable option check Everlane or Reformation.
10. Cami
Another core piece in your capsule wardrobe is the cami. It's super easy to dress up and very versatile. Go for a cotton one for a more casual look or a silk one for more elegant vibes. No more is the silk cami just for evening events or the bedroom, but now it is breaking out into our everyday outfits. Combine with your other basic pieces for outfits that combine Hepburn with Kardashian.
11. Jeans
Everyone needs a good pair of jeans in their closet. By "good" I mean comfortable, soft, stretchy, and easy to style with the rest of your garments. A pair that you can wear on repeat without getting bored. The fit and the cut don't really matter as it's a personal choice, but when it comes to color, go for a white, black, grey and of course, a blue denim pair too. This way you'll be fully covered as these four pieces will be the bread and butter for every outfit, any season. The best place for eco-friendly organic denim is Boyish.

12. Skirt
Let's bring some femininity to your wardrobe, shall we? If you're not a fan of dresses then the little black dress doesn't have to be on your all-year basics list, but you shouldn't go without a nice skirt. Same as the jeans, the cut is absolutely your prerogative. However, be smart and go for a style that complements your body shape.
13. Smart Trousers
A pair of smart pants is a fundamental piece to add to your capsule wardrobe staples. Wear them with some white sneakers, a basic tee, and a trench coat to go on a coffee date, or be interview-ready with a white shirt, blazer, and pumps.
14. Joggers
The super soft and comfy beige joggers you bought at the beginning of the lockdown and have been wearing nonstop since – Keep them! They are not just for running. You can style them with a hoodie for a sporty/casual everyday look, or throw on a blazer for more stylish/elegant attire.
15. Black Leggings
Can you even remember life before black leggings came on the scene? These beauties are now universal and they are not going anywhere. When the likes of Bella Hadid and Hilary Duff are advocates of this timeless basic piece, you know it's worth taking notice of. Chloe Kardashian doesn't swear by them for nothing! They are the essential of essentials and will be for years to come.
16. White Sneakers
My obsession with white sneakers is borderline unhealthy but girl if you don't have some already, you need to get your hands – or feet – on a set that suits your personal style. A pair of plain white Adidas Superstar is a classic that goes with everything from joggers to suits.
17. Ankle Boots
Another essential piece of footwear you should own is the classy ankle boot. The real reason you should keep these shoes by the door is so that if there's a fire, you can easily grab them as you run for your life. Investing in a high-quality pair is well worth it as you'll be wearing these lovelies, again and again, day after day. Aim to find a balance of comfort, quality, and style. A great place for ethical vegan boots is NOIZE.
Now we covered the shoes, moving to the accessories.
18. Black Bag
The black bag is must-have wardrobe staple. Whether it be a clutch or a tote bag, invest in a timeless piece that you can wear for years to come. Remember, bags are not just the cherry on top of your delicious outfit, they are functional too. So depending on how much you're planning on carrying around day to day, think smart, then style.
19. Classy Pair Of Sunglasses
Finishing off the list with a classy pair of sunglasses. They're not only essential to protect your eyes but can completely elevate your look. To be honest, who doesn't look better in a gorgeous pair of shades, regardless of whether the sun is shining or not. A sunny disposition is the only excuse you need to shine all year round.
